IMPORTANCE OF POLYPHENOLS- Found in Fruits and Vegetables

There is a super-food we all should include in our diet. Our ancestors stayed healthy by living on berries and roots which were a huge part of their diet. Most berries contain polyphenols which help our bodies stay healthy in so many ways. They aid digestion and metabolism, keeping arteries clean, supply energy and improve immunity by providing anti-oxidants. Other food substances that are high in polyphenols are dark chocolates, red wine, red cherries, onions, apples, oranges, teas and coffee. However, they are most beneficial to your health if you can eat them without artificial sugar. There are many varieties of polyphenols needed by our body, so just eating only one source of it won’t harness its full potential.

Special Consideration on Polyphenols include:
·         Polyphenols are powerful metabolic-enhancing nutrients
·         They help boost energy and keep you healthy; e.g. grape seed extract and mulberry.
·         They help reduce gas and bloating, with their fiber content.
·         They are powerful antioxidants which protect our cells from free radicals associated with chronic infections and diseases like cancer, dementia and heart diseases. Hence, they enhance longevity.

Since every rational being wants to live long, it is therefore important to watch what we eat or drink. It is worthy of note here that combining polyphenol-rich foods with our daily meal will give our body the biggest health boost. However, just eating foods rich in polyphenols does not guarantee these benefits, as many of these foods have complex mixtures of different polyphenols that need to be absorb properly into the body system. Also, factors like exposure to sunlight, storage, cooking methods and ripeness can affect the polyphenol content of the fruits/food that is absorbable into the body.

To access polyphenol products in your grocery store, such as pomegranate or apple juice, always look out for those that have labels such as isoflavones, flavonoids and flavonols. You have all it takes to live healthy at your disposal; so eat your way to sound health.
